How do i beat the abyss it's doing two heavy attacks in a row and it's almost impossible to beat.Can you give a tactic?

Out of curiosity, I would like to know whether the author of this game is male or female! I ask because: * Of the interesting plot/subject matter * The female protagonist * (Somewhat juxtaposed with those two) the art (which is totally awesome btw) which features a lot of... Feminine features....

Both of them have huge health bars that even spirit arrow and final fisting barely cut into. I've tried grinding in the witch's stomach but the xp gain is so slow and it doesnt seem like the stats are even going up from level to level. I've looked everywhere for new armor or weapons or something but im stuck!...
